Haiti is one of the most well known earthquakes to have happened in the past 50 years, and with a magnitude of 7.0, it was quite a severe earthquake as well. The earthquake started on Tuesday 12 January. An estimated 1.5 million people were thought to have been made homeless, due to the damage and destruction to 293,383 houses. The earthquake was caused by the movemont of two tectonic plates in opposite directions until they slipped past each other. The energy caused by them slipping caused as much destruction as 32,000 small atomic bombs.
